Iconic sign over Auschwitz is stolen

The iconic sign with its ironic translation “Work will make you free” was stolen from the entrance gate to the former WWII concentration camp near Oświęcim (Auschwitz) in Poland.

Why?

Even if someone is successful in selling it, it’s not as if it will somehow appear over someone’s yard or in a museum somewhere. And God help us all if someone out there today harbors similar thoughts to build new concentration camps in some attempt to rid the world of “undesirables.”

I don’t think that the theft of this can be compared to the theft of a priceless piece of art from a major museum where there’s likely already a buyer for the art. It’s unthinkable that someone would want to display this anywhere other than where it once stood as a marker to the horrors of history and the evil that men can think up.
